Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a Complementary Therapy that works on the feet or hands enabling the body to heal itself. It is a healing art which has been practised by ancient civilisations such as China, India and Egypt for thousands of years.

The feet contain reflex areas that correspond to organs and systems in the rest of the body. Reflexology stimulates these reflex areas and observes that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension a corresponding part of the body.

By gently applying specific pressure and compression techniques with the hands, the therapist can detect imbalances and blockages of energy in these areas. Reflexology helps to unblock these energy pathways, and so allows the body to heal and balance itself.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is suitable for most adults and children. Treatments are started with a consultation, which allows the therapist to assess the client.

Certain conditions such as diabetes and heart conditions require permission from your GP prior to the initial treatment. Each treatment is tailored specifically to the individual and specifically for their particular problems.

The reflexology treatment

The treatment will last for around an hour. You will lie back and relax, fully clothed in a chair or therapy bed. Only shoes and socks need be removed.

Feet or hands will be worked over, enabling the therapist to detect and correct imbalances in the corresponding parts of the body.

The treatment usually induces a state of relaxation, which is known to reduce physical and mental stress, which is considered to be the cause of so much ill health.
